Extending Upwards

You may have been thinking about adding a loft conversion for growing teenagers, guest rooms, a master bedroom with plenty of natural light, or even a study & cosy reading corner. If so, you can save substantially on costs, compared with up-scaling to a larger house. Some of our clients want to use their new dormer loft conversion to create flat conversions or H.M.O.s. A Beautiful Butterfly

We do many loft conversions, as you can see in our case studies pages here. One particularly interesting example was where the client was not sure whether to do a loft conversion together with extension, or with a flat conversion. He opted for the latter option, and we created an infill in his butterfly roof (click here or on the images for more information.) Our client had a large detached property by Wimbledon Common, which naturally falls under one of Merton’s Conservation Areas. Therefore it was less contentious for us to add space between the butterfly wings of his roof than via an extension.

The new loft space had a dynamic penthouse effect – with its bi-folding doors and a stunning roof terrace – as you can see in the first render. The double stairwells created some opulent grandeur in the hallway (which became one of the communal spaces within the flat conversion.)

Your Application and PD

We will be happy to discuss with you whether your loft conversion planning permission will be a Permitted Development. Because of the pressure on housing stock, the government introduced Permitted Development guidelines to make it easier for families to extend to the rear, side or into their lofts. The current relaxed rules have been extended until May 2019, and will likely be further extended then (with modifications). In May 2019 there were some changes with the extended rules; for example with commercial applications.
