5-6 Cottage Green
This project explores a proposed residential development in Walworth, Southwark where Extension Architecture carried out feasibility and design work to convert a currently industrial/open storage site into a new residential scheme featuring interlocking green spaces and a mix of apartments.
The Problem Statement
The Walworth site was used for open storage and had no residential use or quality public space. The client saw the housing demand and aimed to unlock the site’s potential by analyzing constraints and determining feasible residential units.

The Client Brief
The approach was to maximise the site’s development potential by exploring the feasibility of a residential scheme that would deliver a range of homes suitable for different occupiers from single professionals to growing families.
The brief called for a thoughtful redevelopment strategy that would transform an underutilised industrial area into a high-quality residential environment, create active green spaces, and improve public access and openness, while offering a compelling proposal for Southwark Council’s consideration.
The Solution
Extension Architecture began with an in-depth feasibility study and SWOT analysis to understand the site’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and constraints. This informed a design strategy that proposed two interlocking residential blocks arranged around shared green space and a communal courtyard.
The arrangement promoted improved public access and activity on site, increased biodiversity, and created meaningful landscaped areas for residents. Within the two blocks, the scheme proposed a total of 36 apartments ranging from studios to three-bedroom flats to serve a diverse range of future occupants.
Through development sketches and 3D visualisations, the team helped both the client and planning officers grasp the proposed massing and internal layouts, demonstrating how the project responded to site context and policy.
Summary Of Works
Although the development did not proceed due to a change in client circumstances, Extension Architecture successfully completed the feasibility and pre-application design work and demonstrated a credible residential proposal. The work showcased the practice’s capability in handling larger development opportunities, urban planning, and value engineering across significant residential schemes.
