Site Analysis & Existing Conditions Modelling
The Site Analysis stage creates a digital record of the property. Future design relies on this data for accuracy and efficiency.
The Site Analysis stage is essential, as it establishes a fully verified digital record of the existing property. This foundational data underpins all future design, planning, and technical decisions, ensuring the project is rooted in accuracy, compliance, and efficiency from the outset. By capturing the site as it truly exists, we remove assumptions and replace them with precise, spatially accurate information that can be measured, referenced, and relied upon throughout the project lifecycle.
This approach improves the quality and coordination of our work while providing a deeper understanding of the site, allowing informed, considered decisions to be made as the design develops.
Using a real-time digital survey, we create a virtual representation of the property. This data is converted into a point cloud and then transferred into Revit, where it becomes the base model used for design development, coordination, and modification.

How Extension Architecture conducts a Site Analysis
This phase ensures accurate documentation and aids change referencing for future design stages. For Environmental Assessment, this information is vital for compliance.
Extension Architecture undertakes a thorough site analysis to ensure all design and planning decisions are based on accurate, current information. We begin with an on-site digital measured survey using Matterport 3D scanning technology, capturing the property exactly as it exists.
This non-invasive survey records internal geometry, spatial relationships, structural elements, and key external reference points where required. The survey typically takes 2–3 hours, depending on the size and complexity of the property.
The full site scan captures a complete 360-degree view of the property, allowing us to assess spatial conditions, structural placement, daylight and sunlight orientation, and overall site context.
This phase ensures accurate documentation and aids change referencing for future design stages. For Environmental Assessment, this information is vital for compliance.
Following the site visit, the captured data is uploaded to Matterport and processed into a high-accuracy digital model.
This data is then converted into a point cloud, providing a precise, measurable representation of the existing building. The point cloud is transferred into Revit, where it becomes the base model used for design development, coordination, and modification.
This process ensures all future work is grounded in verified site information, eliminating assumptions and reducing technical risk.

The Revit model is issued to the lead designer as the verified existing conditions model.
This allows early identification of constraints, accurate assessment of scale and massing, and a clear understanding of relationships with neighbouring properties. Planning submissions and design proposals are developed directly from this model, ensuring technical precision, coordination, and consistency across all stages of the project.
Benefits of A Matterport Survey with Extension Architecture
A site analysis is crucial for effective architectural design, especially when planning extensions.
A thorough site analysis identifies the unique characteristics of a location, including topography, climate, and existing structures. Understanding these factors allows architects to develop designs that enhance functionality and aesthetics while remaining compliant with local regulations. It also helps reveal potential challenges and opportunities early, supporting more sustainable and innovative outcomes.
Key Points:
- Captures site conditions with high measurement accuracy (up to 98.9%)
- Provides reliable, measurable data for design and planning decisions
- Significantly more precise than traditional laser tape methods, which can be subject to deviations of up to 100 mm
