Property is a detached Victorian building located in an area with mixed residential and commercial developments.
The first stage of the design was a feasibility study which explored the potential of the design and limitations imposed by planning policies introduced by the Borough Council. The research included analysis of precedents found in neighbourhood with a similar scope of work.
The brief specified by the client included interior reconfiguration aimed to achieve modern special layout, an open space plan that accommodates following functions: living and dining room and kitchen. Single storey side extension on the ground floor allowed for an enlarged kitchen opening to the garden at the rear of the house. The proposal aimed for interiors to be brought to life with natural light and animated by vegetation by extending onto a patio leading to the garden.
The scope of work included loft conversion, adaptation of an attic for an extra bedroom. To achieve an acceptable height for the ceiling, the proposal included insertion of a dormer. The design of the dormer was a simple in its exterior form although elegant in the choice of material that complemented Victorian features of the existing structure. The large planes of glazing in the dormer facing south allowed for a great amount of light to animate the interior of the loft creating a comforting ambience.
